A belly is a sag in a sewer line where water and waste collect. Home inspectors report over 1 inch of standing water as a flag to look closer. A minor sag may not affect the line; one that keeps clogging needs a repair quote.

Take a closer look when the camera shows more than about an inch of standing water, or when the line keeps clogging. A minor sag that drains may not affect the line at all.
How serious is a sewer line belly? The yardsticks
| Yardstick | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Standing water | Inspectors report "over 1 inch of standing water": a flag to look closer, not a repair rule | InterNACHI sewer scope standard |
| Offset | Report "any offset over ¼-inch" as needing correction | InterNACHI |
| Minor sag | "A minor joint sag may not affect the performance of the pipeline." | National Clay Pipe Institute |
| Camera view | "even a minor depth of water can appear exaggerated" on camera | National Clay Pipe Institute |
A sewer belly with tree roots (root intrusion), a crack or an offset is worse than a belly alone, because each catches debris.
That is our view, not a published rule, and it applies to clay and cast iron lines alike.
Signs of a bellied sewer line
- Slow drains in multiple fixtures at once.
- Recurring clogs in the main sewer line.
- Sewage backups after heavy use, like laundry day.
Only a sewer camera can confirm it and show the exact spot.
What a belly is
John Martino, a New Jersey home inspector who is not part of Power Rooter: "A pipe can sag, creating a belly in the line where water and waste collect. Over time this leads to blockages." (LookSmart Home Inspections)
The National Clay Pipe Institute says sags come from settlement, for example poor bedding or foundation support, "and not the pipe itself". A belly starts and stops within one length of pipe; a joint sag sits at a joint.
How much slope the NYC code requires
The NYC Plumbing Code says drain piping "shall be installed in uniform alignment at uniform slopes".
For a 3 to 6 inch pipe, the size of most house sewers, the minimum is 1/8 inch per foot (NYC Plumbing Code, Table 704.1).
| Length of line | Minimum drop at 1/8 inch per foot |
|---|---|
| 10 feet | 1.25 inches |
| 25 feet | about 3 inches |
| 50 feet | about 6 inches |
Our math from the code table. A belly holding an inch of water undoes much of that fall over a short run. New Jersey uses a different plumbing code; we have not quoted its number.
Does it need fixing?
- Minor sag, drains, no clogs: watch it. Clean the line when it slows.
- Over an inch of water, or repeat clogs: get a repair quote for that section.
- Buying a house: a belly over the inspector's line is a fair reason to ask for a repair quote and a credit.
Read the footage with care. The clay pipe group notes that after cleaning, water can sit "a day or more" before low points fully show.
How a belly is fixed
A fix usually means digging up the sagging section and re-laying it at the proper slope. If bellies and other damage run the length of the line, a full replacement may make more sense.
Cleaning keeps a mild belly flowing but does not change the slope. Angi notes that trenchless methods such as pipe lining are not suitable for pipes with "improper sloping". Sewer line bellies need the slope itself fixed.
What drives the cost of fixing a belly: how deep the line is, how long the sag is, whether it sits under the yard or the street, and the permits and restoration that come with digging.
Who pays to fix it
In New York City, the owner owns and repairs the sewer service line to the city main, using a licensed master plumber (NYC311). In New Jersey, ask your town.
Get the belly on camera
Power Rooter's camera inspection records the line in HD and notes where each problem is and how deep the line sits. The video stays in your Rooter Record account.

Common questions
Does homeowners insurance cover a belly in a sewer line?
Policies differ. Ask your insurer what your policy and any endorsements cover.
Can hydro jetting fix a belly?
No. Jetting clears what sits in the low spot, but the pipe still sags. Only re-laying that section removes the belly.
Is a small belly a deal breaker when buying a house?
Not always. A minor sag that drains may not affect the line. Get the full video and a repair quote, then decide.

If sewage backs up into your Brooklyn basement, stay out of the water, report it to 311 and take photos. On 75% of Brooklyn backup calls in the past year, DEP found no city sewer problem (counts calls, not pipe condition).
Who Is Responsible for the Sewer Line From the House to the Street? Westfield, Cranford and NYC

Orangeburg Pipe, Clay or Cast Iron: What Sewer Pipe Is Under an Older House in Westfield, Cranford or Brooklyn
Orangeburg pipe is a fiber sewer pipe of compressed wood fibers and coal tar pitch, used in many towns in the mid-1900s. As it ages it flattens and loses its round shape. A camera inspection gives clues to whether you have Orangeburg, clay or cast iron.
